Lactase

Common name: Lactase

Chemical name: Β-Galactosidase


Lactase is a food additive used to catalyze the hydrolysis of lactose degradation reactions, resulting in Glucose and Galactose forms. After indigestion, it is absorbed into the wall of the small intestine and bloodstream.


Lactase is suitable for individuals with lacking or deficient in lactase enzyme causing Lactose sugar not being digested and absorbed. This sugar that is not absorbed will pass through the small intestine into the large intestine. Bacteria in the large intestine cause Fermentation resulting in large amounts of gas in the intestines, namely  Hydrogen, Carbon Dioxide and Methane and causing stomachache symptom. In addition, the sugar that is not absorbed and the resulting product from sour spoiling (fermentation) increases the pressure in the large intestine. Therefore more water is drawn into the large intestine and cause diarrhoea.

Application

Lactase is used to digest Lactose and turn the product into Lactose-Free.
For example : Lactose-free milk, lactose-free yoghurt.
